Sustainability and quick build times make SIPs Industries panels an attractive building material

SIPs Industries panels’ sustainable qualities and extremely quick build times are the reasons West Perth architect Daniel Patterson recommends the building product to many of his clients.

“This product has been around for a long time in Europe and it’s now starting to be adopted here,” Mr Patterson, founder and managing director of Arcforms, said. “There are a lot of positives about SIPs and the speed of the build is certainly one of them.”

He said current supply chain issues with building materials did not impact developments using SIPs because the product was manufactured in Western Australia. “It is a very attractive option when you can have a house built within weeks, not months and sometimes years, particularly for developers who can build a home and quickly move onto the next project improving cash flow.”

Mr Patterson also said the number of clients seeking to build more energy-efficient homes was increasing exponentially. “People are really looking at ways they can minimise their energy use and therefore costs. The existing stock of established houses here in WA have traditionally not been designed and built to use energy efficiently.”

The airtight, insulated qualities of SIPs panels keeps buildings warm in winter and cool in summer, significantly reducing electricity costs.

“Other benefits of SIPs is that the panel thickness is less than a regular double-brick build so you actually get yourself an extra 10 per cent of usable floor area in your home. This makes it particularly good to use on tight sites where every square metre counts.

“The panels also span a long distance so you can get uninterrupted floor space without structures needing to support the roof.”

“The panels are an engineered and controlled product which delivers a truer and more consistent surface avoiding the need to conceal inconsistencies in walls or ceilings.”

This also provided more accurate setout, enhancing the level of detail and reducing ongoing maintenance, such as cracks in the walls and cornices.
