What Is a SIP Panel? The Beginner's Guide to Structural Insulated Panels

If you have started researching alternative ways to build a home in Australia, chances are you have come across the term SIP panels. Maybe a builder mentioned them. Maybe you fell down a rabbit hole online. Either way, you are probably wondering what they actually are and whether they are worth your attention.


They are. Here is everything you need to know.

So, What Does SIP Stand For?

SIP stands for Structural Insulated Panel. The name tells you most of what you need to know. These are panels that are both structural, meaning they hold up the building, and insulated, meaning they keep the heat in or out depending on the season.


A SIP panel is made up of three layers. Two outer faces of OSB, which stands for oriented strand board and is a strong engineered timber product, are bonded to an EPS foam core. EPS stands for expanded polystyrene, the same dense foam material used in high-performance packaging and insulation products.


When those three layers are pressed and bonded together under factory conditions, the result is a panel that is incredibly strong, thermally efficient, and surprisingly simple to build with.


Where Did SIPs Come From?

SIPs construction has been around since the 1930s. The concept was pioneered in the United States, and architects like Frank Lloyd Wright were among the early adopters. So while this might feel like new technology to many Australians, it has a long and well-documented history in other parts of the world.

What Can SIPs Be Used For?

This is where a lot of people are surprised. SIPs are not just for walls.

We manufacture panels for walls, floors, and roofs. That means an entire structural shell of a home can be built using SIPs construction, creating a continuous, airtight, insulated envelope from the ground up.


For owner-builders, this is significant. Rather than coordinating multiple framing systems and insulation products from different suppliers, you are working with one cohesive building system designed to fit together.

Why Are Owner-Builders Choosing SIPs?

There are three reasons we hear most often: speed, simplicity, and energy performance.

On speed, once a slab is down, a SIPs shell can be erected and locked up within a week. A full build typically takes three to six months, compared to 18 to 24 months with conventional construction methods. For owner-builders managing budgets, site costs, and holding costs on loans, that time difference is significant.


On simplicity, we often describe our Ready Cut panel range as Lego for grown-ups. The panels are pre-cut to standard dimensions and designed to go together in a logical, repeatable sequence. You do not need an army of trades on site. The build process is straightforward enough that owner-builders can be genuinely involved in the construction of their own home.


On energy performance, this is where SIPs construction really separates itself from conventional building. A standard home built to minimum code leaks air at a rate of around 10 air changes per hour. Our SIPs homes typically test at 0.5 air changes per hour. That figure represents a fundamentally different level of airtightness, and it has a direct impact on how much energy your home uses every day.


Combined with the thermal performance of the EPS core and reduced thermal bridging (the term for heat escaping through structural elements like studs and noggings), you end up with a home that holds its temperature far more effectively than a conventional build.


Our customers regularly report daily energy costs of one to two dollars, compared to five to seven dollars in a traditionally built home. Those numbers add up fast over the life of a mortgage.


Is It Certified and Compliant in Australia?

We know this is one of the first questions architects, builders, and owner-builders ask. The answer is yes.


Our panels hold CodeMark certification across wall, floor, and roof applications. CodeMark is an independent third-party certification scheme that verifies a building product meets the requirements of the National Construction Code. Our certification is audited annually, which means it is not a one-time tick-box exercise.


We are also engineered to Region D cyclonic standards, fire-rated, and termite treated. For owner-builders working in Western Australia, that level of compliance matters.
